Biking In The Quebrada

DAY 1: SALTA - TILCARA.

Arrival into Salta and transfer to the Quebrada de Humahuaca, reaching Tilcara, which will be base for the trip.

Maximum altitude: 2.465 masl (8087 ft.)

DAY 2: TILCARA (B, L).

Today cycle from Tilcara 9km for lunch hosted by a local family. Walk to the Pucara de Juella, which unlike the Pucara de Tilcara has not been rebuilt. Appreciate the way the Omaguacas used to live, as well as the passage of time. Cycle back to Tilcara.

Bicycle tour: 18 km (11 miles)

DAY 3: TILCARA (B, L).

Today cycle south visiting Maimará, Posta de Hornillos, Tunalito, Chañarcito and Purmamarca. Travelling to the town of Purmamarca to visit the Paseo de los Colorados. Transfer by vehicle to Salinas Grandes then cycle through the pools where salt is extracted by hand. Descend from Purmamarca for 33kms through winding roads.

Bicycle route: 33 km (20 miles)

Maximum altitude: 4.170 masl (13.681 ft.)

DAY 4: TILCARA (B, L, D).

Transfer to the national route 9 towards Humahuaca. On arrival cycle through the historical centre then take the road to Peñas Blancas. After traveling about 10 km, arrive at the town of Cocacha and take a short walk through pre-Hispanic farming terraces, followed by lunch. Continue the bike tour passing through the town of Valiazo. Drive to the viewpoint of the majestic Hornocal, a formation from the late Cretaceous period and see the stunning colourful landscape. Begin a 25 km descent passing through Ocumazo and ending at the foot of the Pucará de Calete.

Maximum altitude: 4.720 masl (15.485 ft.)

DAY 5: TILCARA - JUJUY (B).

Time at leisure until airport transfer to Jujuy or extend your trip.
