Stopping at the Zocalo (main square), the Catedral Metropolitana, and Palacio Nacional which hosts Diego Rivera’s murals depicting the history of Mexico. From the city continue to the archaeological site of Teotihuacan, located 50km northeast of Mexico City, one of the most impressive cities of the ancient world, held sacred by the Aztecs. Explore its temples, palaces, and pyramids, including the Quetzalapa lotl Palace Complex, the Temple of the Feathered Conches, the Pyramid of the Moon, and the immense Pyramid of the Sun.

DAY 3: MEXICO CITY - CHOLULA - PUEBLA - OAXACA (B).

Visit the World Heritage Site of Puebla, located 130km southeast of Mexico City, making a stop in Tonantzintla en-route. Visit its exuberant church where under its dome, the surface is covered with colourful stucco saints, devils, flowers, fruits, birds and more. Continue onto Cholula, visiting the Great Pyramid of Cholula, its remains measuring 450m along each side of the base and 65m high, making it larger in volume than Egypt’s pyramid of Cheops. Arrive into Puebla by lunchtime you can take the opportunity to sample Mexico’s national dish, the ‘mole poblano’, which originate from here. You will have time to explore the colonial centre, lined with churches and colonial mansions, many adorned with the beautiful hand painted Talavera tiles for which Puebla is famous, and then continue to Oaxaca.

DAY 4: OAXACA - MONTE ALBAN - OAXACA (B).

Early morning departure to visit Monte Alban - a World Heritage Site - spectacularly situated on a mountain 400 meters above the Oaxaca Valley. Monte Alban is the greatest of the Zapotec cities, and it came to dominate the cultural, religious, and economic life of the region. It is also a triumph of engineering; the mountain top was levelled to allow the creation of the ceremonial site. Explore the Gran Plaza, the Ball Court, the Observatory, the Palace, and other beautiful structures. Returning to Oaxaca, once the centre of the Mixtec and Zapotec civilizations, and walk through the streets of the colonial city centre. View the Cathedral - with its attractive baroque facade, the Iglesia de Santo Domingo - a church with a breath-taking interior that dazzles with gold ornaments, and the Casa Juarez - where Mexico’s great liberal reformer and President Benito Juarez lived. Time to browse the colourful local markets and soak up the bustling atmosphere on the Zocalo (main square), before returning to the hotel late afternoon.

DAY 5: OAXACA - TUXTLA GUTIERREZ - SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS (B).

Fly to Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas. Upon arrival transfer to Chiapa de Corzo dock for a boat tour through the Sumidero Canyon, one of the most spectacular natural reserves in Mexico. It is a geological feature formed 36 million years ago with walls of calcareous rock elevating to more than 1,000 metres. Visit the town of Chiapa de Corzo, that was the first settlement founded by the Spaniards with its Mudejar fountain known as “La Pila”. Continue onto San Cristobal de las Casas.

DAY 6: SAN JUAN CHAMULA - ZINACANTAN - SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS (B).

This morning explore on foot, the colonial city centre of San Cristobal de las Casas. Transfer 10 km into the Chiapas highlands, to the Tzotzil Indian villages of San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan and visit the beautiful white church in San Juan Chamula. The candles, incense and chanting worshippers make a powerful impression. The next stop is the nearby village of Zinacantan, with its pretty church and craft market. Return to San Cristobal for afternoon at leisure.
