DAY 1: ARRIVAL - GUATEMALA CITY

Arrival into Guatemala City and transfer to La Antigua. Time at leisure.


DAY 2:  LA ANTIGUA - CHICHICASTENANGO - LAKE ATITLÁN (B).

Departure to Chichicastenango town village, where every Thursday and Sunday, the inhabitants of the region gather to buy and sell fruit, vegetables, flowers, seeds, animals, textiles, and handicrafts, making it the most colourful and picturesque market in Guatemala. Visit the local Church of Santo Tomás, where the Maya-Quiche natives celebrate their traditional rites. In the afternoon continue towards Lake Atitlán.


DAY 3: LAKE ATITLÁN - LA ANTIGUA (B).

Depart by boat to Santiago Atitlán town, while admiring the three volcanoes that surround one of the 10 most beautiful lakes in the world. On arrival into Santiago, visit the place of worship of Saint Maximon, a clear example of the mixture of pagan rituals with the Catholic religion. In the afternoon, transfer to Panajachel to continue towards La Antigua.


DAY 4: LA ANTIGUA - GUATEMALA CITY (B).

The tour this morning begins with a visit to the historic centre of Antigua. Starting at the Central Park, visiting the major monuments, and taking in cobblestone streets, Bougainvillea falling from ruined buildings and colourful walls with characteristics balconies. Walking around Antigua is like stepping back in time and is a spectacular landscape at the foot of three volcanoes: Agua, Fuego and Acatenango. These are some of the reasons that make Antigua one of the most beautiful colonial cities in the Americas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the afternoon visit the villages of San Juan del Obispo: this small village is famous for holding one of the first Catholic churches in Guatemala that was restored in 1948 by José Luis Álvarez; Santa Maria de Jesús. The village is located under the slopes of Volcán de Agua and has at its central square, a temple built in the seventeenth century with a carved entry arch. Afternoon transfer to Guatemala City.


DAY 5: GUATEMALA CITY - SAN JOSE (COSTA RICA) (B).

This morning transfer to the airport for your flight to San Jose. On arrival transfer to the hotel. In the afternoon take a walking tour of the city. Sites include the National Theatre, the Art Museum, the Cathedral, the National Stadium and the central market. Evening at leisure.


DAY 6: SAN JOSE - ARENAL NATIONAL PARK (B).

Today travel to The Arenal Volcano National Park which surrounds the volcano of the same name and it covers 120 square kilometres from the plains of San Carlos. The majestic views this volcano offers are some of the most impressive in the country and having the chance to admire it in all its splendour, without clouds, is considered a real blessing by the Costa Ricans.

In the evening, you will visit an eco-centre where you will experience a unique night walk enjoy the nocturnal activity of animals such as: sloths, spiders, armadillos, porcupines, amphibians, alligators and some nocturnal birds such as the “chocuaco”. Transfer back to the hotel.


DAY 7: ARENAL NATIONAL PARK (B, D).

Today’s trip it to the active north-western side of the volcano. Walk Las Coladas Trail passing through the rain forest and over a large lava flow that formed in 1992. It is possible to observe a variety of plants, wildlife, and lava formation. The hike ends at a viewing point where, if weather permits you will be able to see red hot lava rolling down the side of the mountain. After your visit to the volcano, continue to Fortuna Hot Springs. The springs consist of five free-flowing pools set in a natural river gorge. Water temperature ranges from 38-43°C. Dinner will be at A Costa Rican home style and then return to the hotel.


DAY 8: ARENAL NATIONAL PARK - SAN JOSE OR BEACH LOCATION (B).

Transfer to San Jose for your return flight or extend your trip.
