King George Island Overnight

DAY 1: PUNTA ARENAS (D).

Arrival into Punta Arenas by air or land. Transfer to the hotel.  Following day at leisure attend the essential meeting giving you a specialized briefing about the Antarctic itinerary.

DAY 2: PUNTA ARENAS (B, D).

Subject to weather conditions today you will fly over the Strait of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego, Darwin Mountain range and the mythical Cape Horn and cross the stormy Drake Sea to reach King George Island. In Argentina, it is known as 25 de mayo Island whereas in Russia, as Waterloo Island. It is the largest of the South Shetland Islands in Antarctica, with a surface of 1.150 km2, a length of 95 km and a maximum width of 25 km. It is also the gateway to the Antarctic Continent and the area that concentrates the largest number of scientific bases in Antarctica. The three large bays are: Fildes, Almirantazgo and King George.

DAY 3: PUNTA ARENAS - FREI BASE AT KING GEORGE ISLAND (B, L, D).

This morning fly to King George Island (Antarctica). The tour guide will take you to visit different areas of the island, such as Villa Las Estrellas (first settlement inhabited by civilians) and the Orthodox Russian Church (at Bellingshausen Station). During the tour you will sail on a zodiac boat to Ardley Island to visit penguin colonies (Adélie, Chinstrap and Gentoo) and navigate around Collins glacier. Overnight at an ‘Ice Camp’, next to Collins Glacier. The camp has a thermal tent (module) as a dining room, a thermal tent for basic hygiene and three thermal tents, accommodating up to two people.

DAY 4: FREI BASE AT KING GEORGE ISLAND - PUNTA ARENAS (B, L, D).

Before departing back to Punta Arenas today you will walk to La Elefanteras where we will see elephant seals and other species in the area. You will also walk to the Chinese Base ‘Great Wall’ and weather permitting visit other interesting sights in the area.

DAY 5: PUNTA ARENAS (B).

Time at leisure in Punta Arenas until your flight or extend your stay.

Accommodation - 4 nights in minimum 3-star hotels.

Meals - As specified in the itinerary (B = Breakfast, L = Lunch, D = Dinner).

Luggage - Ideally a backpack type bag weighing up to 10kg per person.

Transfers - all airport transfers from arrival on Day 1 to final day (assuming specific group flights booked).

Tours (with local bilingual English-speaking guides) - King George Island: Boat & walking tours.
